#13 - Superchunk - Foolish - 1994

This is the sound that defined my understanding of the "indie" scene back in the early 90's. At that time I thought all indie rock came from Chapell Hill, NC. Superchunk went back to their roots on Merge records after a brief relationship with major label record making. This is a great upbeat breakup album (upbeat and breakup not usually being found in one place). Mac McCaughan (singer/guitarist) and Laura Ballance (bassist) were in the process of dissolving their own romance amidst the recording of "Foolish". The albums tone is hinted at by Laura's sinister cover art. You can hear the tension on the album and it works great. Driveway to Driveway has reached anthemic levels in my personal pantheon of rock songs. This is another album I used to rock on my walkman during college art class. Still one of the best live shows I've seen too.

I find it almost impossible to think of Superchunk without thinking of the time Chad and I went to see them at the Exit In. We were driving up from Murfreesboro and, since I was not yet 21, we struck a deal whereby I would drink all afternoon and Chad would drive to the show. Once there, Chad had drinking privileges and I started sobering up for the drive home. The show was outstanding. Chad was rightfully drunk on the way home and developed an insane craving for Krystal chili-cheese fries. The drive-thru line at Krystal was enormous. We listened to the entire Misfits "Legacy of Brutality" album, start to finish, waiting in that damn line. When we finally got to the window, the manager told us that they were fresh out of chili-chesse fries. He had a really stupid grin on his face when he told us. It was the kind of grin that incites violence. I sensed movement to my right and realized Chad was going to spring out of the window and kill Krystal boy. I had to hit the gas and get out of there.
